EMERGENCY NGO & MOAS partner to provide rescue and medical care to migrants in the Mediterranean

Safe and legal routes for people fleeing war, totalitarianism and poverty have never been so necessary. More than 2,000 people have drowned in the ‪#‎Mediterranean‬ Sea trying to reach safety in Europe since the beginning of the year. In only one week in May, more than 1,138 people trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea have lost their lives or are still unaccounted for.

For two years, EMERGENCY has been providing medical assistance to migrants and refugees landing ashore in Sicily, but the time has come for us to do even more and provide medical care and rescue at sea to those trying to reach Europe.

Today we are embarking upon a new and important journey. We are setting sail on the Topaz Responder from Malta and starting our new search and rescue project with @MOAS in one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world, the Central Mediterranean route. During the next few months our staff will work on board the vessel in order to provide medical care to migrants and refugees saved at sea.

We couldn’t do this without your help; follow us in this new journey. Share this post or comment to wish good luck to our team on ‘Topaz Responder’: Barbara, Andrea, Luca, Mirjana, Gianfilippo and Bader.
