Among those presenting at this memorial will be volunteers from EMERGENCY USA who will speak to the very profound and personal inspiration that Howard Zinn had on thier lives as well as the significance and legacy of his actions in support of EMERGENCY USA.
In the context of this venue, and remembering and celebrating Howard Zinn's call to action, one very special past event must be mentioned. In May of 2006, Howard Zinn and Dr. Gino Strada (Executive Director and Founder of the NGO EMERGENCY) co-presented at the Just War event at this same location in Los Angeles.

In Honor of Our Friend Howard Zinn, 1922 - 2010
With tremendous sadness, The Board of Directors of EMERGENCY USA learned that EMERGENCY supporter and champion Howard Zinn passed away today, January 27th 2010 in Santa Monica, CA at age 87. He was traveling with his family when he had a heart attack.
The world has lost an amazing human being who did so much every day to make peace a reality. In one of his many books Professor Zinn spoke of a goal to be "prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, be more prepared to speak up, to act against injustice wherever [we] saw it."
In addition to his call to action and challenge to the status quo, we will miss his unique measure of compassion and the down-to-earth sense of humor he shared with so many of us.
Thank you to Jason Bosch of the EMERGENCY USA Denver group for filming an interview with Howard Zinn in 2007. In it he talks about how he learned about EMERGENCY USA, why he became a supporter and why it's important for all of us to continue our efforts.http://vimeo.com/8305785
We welcome you to share your experiences with Howard and the impact his example has had on your own life by sending an email to info@emergencyusa.org. These comments will become part of a tribute that EMERGENCY USA is preparing in Howard Zinn's honor.
Howard's site offers us this guidance: "In our shock and grief, we know what Howard would say to us, 'Don't mourn, organize!'"
