Emergency

Anabah General Hospital

EMERGENCY initiated efforts in Afghanistan in the mountainous Panjshir Valley ─ an area riddled with landmines and a decimated infrastructure.  The first of EMERGENCY's medical facilities was established in the village of Anabah by converting and updating military barracks into a surgical hospital. The EMERGENCY Surgical Center for War Victims initiated surgical and medical services in December 1999.

In 2002, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the local Ministry of Health. EMERGENCY has since extended its admissions criteria to the Center to now offer general surgery, internal medicine and pediatric care. The Surgical and Medical Center is the only hospital serving a vast area with approximately 250,000 inhabitants, in addition to 200,000 refugees from Kabul.

The complete lack of well-equipped, free medical facilities in the area prompted EMERGENCY to further extend its services. In June 2003, a Maternity Center was opened adjacent to the EMERGENCY Surgical and Medical Center. EMERGENCY now runs a pediatric program providing treatment at the Center’s outpatient department. This program sees an average of 230 patients per month. The more severe cases are admitted to the medical pediatric ward at the Center, while children requiring surgical procedures are admitted to the adult surgical ward.
