Emergency

Kabul Surgical Center

On April 25, 2001, EMERGENCY began treating patients at the Surgical Center in Kabul by converting an abandoned nursery in the city center. Once renovated it became the hospital's nucleus. This was the second surgical center that EMERGENCY established in Afghanistan to provide assistance to civilian war victims in need.

The medical services of the 95-bed facility continued to grow in successive years, resulting in broadening of admission criteria.  In 2002, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the local Ministry of Health, hospital services were extended from war surgery to include trauma and emergency surgery.

In August 2003, in order to guarantee adequate treatment for seriously ill patients, a state-of-the-art 6-bed resuscitation and intensive care unit was opened. Later, in August 2005, a CT Scan unit was installed to address the continuing rise in numbers of head trauma cases. This is the first and only medical center in Afghanistan to have a CT scan accessible free of charge to the general population. The CT scan allows for non-invasive examinations of patients suffering from cranial and abdominal injuries. These injuries most often result from road traffic accidents (RTA). EMERGENCY’s hospital in Kabul has become an important referral center for war and trauma surgery in the entire country.

Over the years, EMERGENCY has created a network of 12 first aid posts (FAP), primary healthcare centers (PHC), and clinics, some of which treat patients in the main prisons around Kabul.  Seriously ill patients seen at the FAP and PHC are referred to the Surgical Center in Kabul for further treatment.

In 2005, EMERGENCY embarked on a joint effort with the Afghan National Institute of Nursing. Third year nursing students are now able to gain work experience at the Surgical Center in Kabul three days a week under the supervision of EMERGENCY clinical staff.

The annual running costs of the Kabul Surgical Center are approximately $2,400,000.
