The Central African Republic (CAR) is among the least developed countries in the world. It is ranked 171 out of 177 countries in the UNDP Human Development Index (HDI). Life expectancy at birth in CAR is 43.7 years. Access to basic healthcare services is minimal, and there is a true lack of skilled personnel to run the existing medical facilities in the country.
The Bangui Pediatric Center is part of the EMERGENCY Regional Health Program for Africa consisting of a network of facilities providing free of charge pediatric health care in the region. The Center is open 24 hours a day, and offers health assistance, and health and hygiene education to children up to the age of 14.
An international medical team provides on-the-job-training to the local staff. The center is equipped with a cardiac surgery outpatient department where EMERGENCY’s international medical staff schedules screenings for patients suffering from cardiac problems. Those in need of cardiac surgery are transported free of charge to the Salam Center for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum, Sudan. After surgery, free post-operative treatment (including medication) is undertaken by the Center, in Bangui.
The ultimate aim of the EMERGENCY Regional Health Program for Africa is not only to build capacity in terms of infrastructure, but to also provide on-the-job training to locally recruited staff be it at the Salam Center in Khartoum, as well as at each of the subsequent pediatric centers to be built by EMERGENCY in the entire network
EMERGENCY’s staff examines an average of 80 children per day at the Bangui Paedatric Center.
The estimated average annual running costs of the Pediatric Center in Bangui are expected to be approximately $700,000.
