With the situation in Darfur quickly deteriorating, EMERGENCY carried out a survey in various cities, to verify the needs of local health facilities, which were badly equipped and had very few drugs available.

The Teaching Hospital of Al Fashir, the major surgical center for the whole state, serving a population of around 250,000, was initially selected.

EMERGENCY built a surgical block with two operating theatres and sterilization area, as well as a new ward.

These were fully equipped and stocked with medical supplies adequate for six months, and were handed over to the local authorities.

EMERGENCY also repaired the hospital’s septic tank system and restored its fresh water system.
