In December, 2005 EMERGENCY opened a Pediatric Clinic to provide primary health care for the children in the Mayo refugee camp, which keeps growing on the outskirts of the capital city, Khartoum, as a result of the war between North and South.
The pediatric clinic is in the section of the camp called “Angola”, where the health care situation is at its most appalling: with a population of 50,000 (50% children) there is just one clinic, which charges fees. Its services are irregular due a lack of personnel and financial resources.
EMERGENCY’s Pediatric Clinic provides first aid and primary health care free of charge. It has a six-bed ward and an ambulance for transferring the most serious cases to Bashair hospital in Khartoum.
The Pediatric Clinic treats approximately 1,400 children per month.
