EMERGENCY continues to deliver free, high-quality care in the midst of war.
Sudan: Chantal Will Be Able to Live a Normal Life
EMERGENCY’s Salam Centre is based in Khartoum, Sudan. We provide free, high-quality cardiac surgery, whilst our traveling screening program makes sure that we reach as many people who need treatment as possible. Chantal is one of those people. She is four years old and from Burundi. She lives two hours away from the capital Bujumbura. When she was a one-year-old, her parents discovered that she had a heart disease. Since then, she has been hospitalized five times with breathing difficulties. Her condition was confirmed during an EMERGENCY screening mission in Burundi in August 2017. The cardiologist who visited included Chantal among the patients that may require surgery at the Salam Centre.
She arrived in Khartoum with her father. A few days later, she was operated upon by highly qualified staff, free-of-charge. Following the operation, Chantal and her father stayed at the Salam Centre guesthouse for one month in order for the her to receive the appropriate follow-up physiotherapy before going back home. Once Chantal flies to Burundi with her father, she will be able to live a normal life without any further therapy.
