Fighting in Sudan: Impact on EMERGENCY’s Facilities Across the Country
On the morning of 15 April 2023, armed conflict began in the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. Fighting has since spread throughout the country, and displaced millions.
EMERGENCY immediately reshaped its activities in Sudan.
In Khartoum, the activities of the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery continue, albeit at a limited capacity. Five new INR clinics have been opened outside the city to provide pre- and post-operative treatment and anti-coagulant therapies to cardiac surgery patients who cannot reach Khartoum due to the conflict.
In Port Sudan and Nyala, the Paediatric Centres remain open, where we offer free treatment to children under the age of 14. The Paediatric Centre in Mayo is closed.
In August 2023, EMERGENCY opened a new Centre for Emergency and Trauma Surgery in the Salam Centre complex to respond to growing needs of the population for treatment of both war injuries and trauma from civilian causes.
