20th Anniversary of Anabah Maternity Centre

In June 2003, EMERGENCY opened a Maternity Centre in the Panjshir Valley, Afghanistan.

Over the past 20 years, our team in Anabah, led by the women of Afghanistan, have admitted around 100,000 patients and delivered over 76,000 babies.

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and working together with a network of 16 First Aid Posts and Primary Healthcare Centres in the Panjshir Valley, our Maternity Centre ensures that families have access to all the services they need in a country where the maternal and infant mortality rates are among the highest in the world.

Every day, our colleagues work to deliver this high-quality healthcare to parents and their children at the only specialised and entirely free facility of its kind in this part of Afghanistan.

The Centre also serves as an accredited training hub in the specialties of paediatrics and gynaecology, where we educate the next generation of Afghan medical professionals; female healthcare workers, in particular, are crucial for providing healthcare to the women and children of the Valley.

For 20 years, our colleagues’ commitment and dedication have been unwavering: despite the changing landscape in Afghanistan, the doors of our Maternity Centre in Anabah have never shut.

In 2023, we welcomed an average of more than 600 newborns every month.
